Do you suffer from a condition called FOMO? This condition has been around for decades but is very present in this technology age. Until recently, I had not heard of FOMO but I have heard of what it stands for: F.O.M.O. = FEAR OF MISSING OUT.
Fear of missing out is a social anxiety stemmed from the belief that others might be having fun while the person experiencing the anxiety is not present. It is characterized by a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing. FOMO can lead to depression, increased feelings of unhappiness and greater involvement in unhealthy behaviors. This is not my conclusions but those of medical and social experts.
The explosion of social media has launched many people headfirst into the FOMO experience. Even when we are “together” we connect by phone. Yes, our phones are valuable tools particularly during this pandemic but have we long ago become addicted to them? Many people have the need for their smart phones to be “tuned” into things that are going on – everywhere. Not wanting to miss anything. But we have been missing something very important, hands on connection with family, friends and God. This is the true Missing Out. – Linda
