The Stone Rolled Away
Look! The stone rolled away, from the tomb’s dark door,
Jesus isn’t there, He’s alive once more!
A miracle that Easter morn, so long ago,
Gives us all hope—let your kindness show.
HE HAS RISEN! HE IS ALIVE!
This month we’re continuing to look at What Are the Bible and Creeds? Too often, Bibles just sit on shelves and collect dust. They don’t work very well that way. For Bibles to work, you have to open them and read them. And more than that, they should be read prayerfully. Simply going through the motions isn’t enough. We should pray that God will enlighten us by the power and work of the Holy Spirit, and that by doing so we may be made holier people.
But, for many people, reading the Bible may seem like a daunting task. Where do you start? At the beginning and read straight through? It’s easy to get stuck in all the genealogies. How about starting with the New Testament? Yikes! There’re genealogies there too! No wonder people start reading the Bible with the best of intentions but just can’t sustain it. The Bible has some incredibly great stories, but it can sometimes be hard to understand. This is why it’s good to be in a Bible study group. We help each other to understand the Bible.
It’s also important that we recite creeds together, especially during worship. The content of our faith really does matter, and by reciting creeds, we rehearse that basic content again and again. Churches are not just gathering places. They are communities of people who confess God’s saving work through the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we recite our creeds, we are reminded of our identity as a people of God, a people who believe in a saving, living God who is constantly at work within our midst. We are reminded that the past, present, and future are all God’s, that God has saved, is saving, and will always save until heaven and earth are one.
Next month we’ll continue looking at What Are the Bible and Creeds? I pray that you may come to understand and believe more and more with each passing day, just how special and loved by God you are!
Peace be with you, Buster
