Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner
What does dinner look like at your house? Do you use more than one dining room – one for every day and another for fancy occasions? Do you eat in or order out more often? Do you dine on your own, with characters from a good show or good book to keep you company, or is your table full of family? Right now, guests are pretty limited as we maintain safe distancing from each other. What do you remember (all that long ago) of being a guest at someone’s house for dinner? How did you feel, based on the hospitality shown? Were there family rituals or practices you had to pick up that were different from your own?
There is something special about sharing a meal together, whether with our own family or sharing the company of friends. Many celebrations happen around a dinner table. And the dinner table has had more than its share of awkward moments too.
So, what do you think it would be like to have Jesus come as a dinner guest to your house? “Oh, I know it would just be glorious!” Well, don’t be too quick to answer. The Gospels are surprisingly full of Jesus sharing meals with people of all kinds! Sometimes there was celebration. Sometimes there was mourning. Sometimes things were downright cringe-worthy! All of the time, Jesus surprised people.
Throughout August, we’re going to get a taste (Ha! Taste! See what I did there?) of what it’s like to catch some grub with the Messiah each Sunday in worship! See what happens as bread is broken, wine is poured, and the world is turned upside down. You won’t want to miss what happens next!
